Kiswahili translation being distributed in Great Lakes region

The distribution of the Kiswahili condensed edition of Nonkilling Global Political Science (Ujenzi wa Jamii Isiyokuwa na Mauaji) throughout Africa’s Great Lake region was initiated this month. CGNV-Great Lakes produced and printed 5000 copies of this volume which will be presented in a series of seminars in Burundi, Rwanda and DR Congo through nine partner organizations.

2009_congo_seminarsIn Burundi, Ubuntu n’ubuzima hose (UBUHO) will be in charge of distribution in the Bururi and Makamba provinces; Colonie de Pionniers de Développement (CPD) will be in charge of the Cibitoke province; and CREDES will distribute the book in the country’s capital Bujumbura. The seminars will follow the methodology established in the February 15, 2005 Bujumbura two-day program.

In the DR Congo MLECI Congo will be in charge of the southern part of the Fizi territory and the Kivu province; CGNV-Uvira will work in the Uvira territory and the northern part of the Fizi territory; SODAF will be in charge of the Katanga province; APDA will be in charge of the Walungu, Kabare and Kalehe territories and the area surrounding the Bukavu region; and SOCOODER will provide coverage of the mountainous areas in the Fizi and Uvira territories. Finally, AMAHORO will be in charge of distributing the book across Rwanda.

Africa’s Great Lakes Region has experienced severe armed conflicts, genocides, population displacements and violent political strife during the past two decades. During the 1994 genocide between 800,000 and one million people were killed in Rwanda alone. Since the beginning of he Second Congo War in 1998, over 5 million people have been killed making it the world’s deadliest conflict since World War II. It is estimated that in the Congo death rates are close to 45,000 per month, mainly due to widespread disease and famine.
