Nonkilling Hawai`i Advisory Council Meets

On April 9, the Nonkilling Hawai`i Advisory Council met at Unity Church of Hawai`i, for the thrid time since its establishment in 2009. In attendance were: Ha’aheo Guanson, Keith Haugen, Nanci Kreidman, Glenn D. Paige, Glenda Paige, Rebecca Shor, M. Kalani Souza, Olivier Urbain, Kerrie Urosevich, Karen Cross and Katherine Li.

The issues discussed included updates on Center for Global Nonkilling accomplishments in 2009 (e.g., the Global Nonkilling Leadership Academy and the Role of members of the Advisory Committee in the Academy), a viewing of the short film from the Leadership Academy and a report about how the Alumnae begin nonkilling work in their home countries. CGNK has been actively cultivating relationships in Hawai`i on the community-level (Domestic Violence, Suicide Prevention, etc.) and shared Hawai`i’s participation in the W.H.O. Violence Prevention Alliance.

Stories were also relayed by the group of strategies that have worked in each participants organization to prevent/reduce/transform violence and killing. A lively discussion took place the importance of identifying Heroes in the city and state working towards nonkilling. In the context of the spiritual and cultural aspect of the Nonkilling Hawai`i project, items were generated during the meeting including a proposal to have a local Leadership Academy for Hawai`i geared toward getting young people involved and trained in local political process; the creation of a Retreat Center to help/support helpers and caregivers; and the production of a 9o minute “Mocumetary” with the help of local students.
