Nonkilling at International Peace Education Annual Meeting

Luis Botero, CGNK Education and Training Global Team Leader participated at the 2010 International Institute for Peace Educational annual meeting, held in Cartagena, Colombia. Botero introduced the nonkilling perspective and provide local policy and education examples, as that of the Bellavista jail in Medellin, a prison built for 1,700 but holding over 5,500. Bellavista went from several killings per week to zero killings in a five years period after training of inmates was conduced in 2000.

Since 1982, the International Institute for Peace Educational annual meetings have been a pedagogical structure for global peace learning by bringing participants together from around the world to address some of the most pressing problems of global society as a community of inquiry, interpretation and learning. This year the meeting was convened on the topic “Learning to read the world from multiple perspective: peace education toward diversity and inclusion”, with 62 participants from 15 countries.
