CGNK Granted Special Consultative Status with the UN ECOSOC
The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at its Coordination and management meeting in July 2014 adopted the recommendation of the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations to grant Special Consultative Status to the Center for Global Nonkilling.
Consultative status for an organization enables it to actively engage with ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies, also enabling the Council to seek expert information or advice from organizations with special competence in a subject matter. CGNK’s Special status entitles the organization to designate official representatives to the United Nations Headquarters in New York and the United Nations offices in Geneva and Vienna.
The UN Secretary-General may request organizations to carry out studies or prepare papers and organizations may submit written statements relevant to the work of the Council on subjects in which these organizations have a special competence. CGNK will also be able to request United Nations facilities for the accommodation of conferences or smaller meetings related to the work of ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies, including the United Nations Human Rights Council, the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice or the UN Commission on the Status of Women.
CGNK had previously participated in the UN system through the World Health Organization’s Violence Prevention Alliance, a specialized agency working with the United Nations through the coordinating machinery of the Economic and Social Council. The recognition of Special Consultative status is also a recognition of the Center’s work since 2009, when the application process was initiated.
