Applications for Glenn D. Paige Memorial Award Open
The Spark M. Matsunaga Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa has opened the applications period for the Spring 2009 Glenn D. Paige Nonkilling Memorial Award. This is the second time this award is offered to full-time Graduate Students of the University of Hawai’i system in collaboration with the Center for Global Nonkilling. The award was established in 2018 in memory of Professor Glenn D. Paige (1929-2017), founder of the Center for Global Nonkilling, who taught Political Science at the University of Hawai‘i (1967–92), introducing the course on nonviolent political alternatives (1978–92). The 2019 Award details can be downloaded here.
The award seeks to support the development of nonkilling theory and research by encouraging graduate students to produce original scientific work that tackles issues related to the construction of nonkilling societies, where killing, threats to kill and conditions conductive to killing are absent, particularly in relation to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals target 16.1, “to significantly reduce all forms of violence and related death rates everywhere”. The inaugural 2018 Award was awarded to Ms. Sarah Juran with a proposal focusing on Solomon Island Women and the role they play in peacebuilding and peacekeeping in their society.
Applicants are expected to submit a one-page paper proposal. If selected, awardees should develop the proposal into a full paper (approximately 10,000 words), to be submitted by December 1. Based on the proposal, a mentor from the Center for Global Nonkilling’s Research Committees will be assigned to support the writing work. The paper will be evaluated for publication in the peer-reviewed Global Nonkilling Working Papers (ISSN 2077-141X). Besides the award, awardees will receive 5 copies of their published paper if selected.
The award is to be split in two terms. During the annual award ceremony in May the awardee will receive a $100 prize and another $100 worth in academic books published by the Center for Global Nonkilling. Another $150 will be provided at the completion of the full paper (December 1 at the latest).
Evaluation Criteria: Applicants will be evaluated on their ability show: the proposal’s merit and the likelihood of successful completion of the full paper. Applicant’s ability and academic record will also be considered. If no suitable applications are received, no awards will be made.
