CGNK reiterates call for universal ratification of Genocide Convention
During the adoption of the report of the Universal Periodic Review of Madagascar at the Human Rights Council on Thursday 12th of March, Christophe Barbey, our representative at the United Nations in Geneva, highlighted the fact that genocide must be made a “crime of the past”.
Christophe Barbey insisted on the fact that ratifying the convention on the prevention and the punishment of the crime of genocide is one of the ways available to reach this goal, a goal needed for the dignity of humanity and for the worth and value of our human History. As Madagascar had declined ratifying the convention, CGNK strongly asked the Authorities of the country to change their mind and do this without further delay.
CGNK, through the Universal Periodic Review procedure, runs a campaign challenging all the countries that have not yet ratified the convention on genocide to urgently do so. Currently 44 countries are still in need of doing this ratification. Since the beginning of our campaign in 2018, around half of the countries that still need to do this ratification of the genocide convention have been asked to do so. All but three have accepted ratifying the convention and three countries have already done this ratification: Mauritius, Dominica and Turkmenistan.
Progress is still needed and as such ratifications may take time, we remain proactive on the issue. If you like our work at the United Nations, please consider giving us a tip every time we intervene there defending nonkilling policies and human rights for all.
