Sierra Leone abolishes the death penalty
CGNK congratulates Sierra Leone for adopting a new law abolishing the death penalty. The country has become the 110th country worldwide and 23rd African country to end capital punishment. CGNK had explicitly recommended such abolition during the country’s third Universal Periodical Review cycle in 2021. We also recommended the ratification of the Genocide convention, a demand which was accepted and still needs to be confirmed. Continuing pressure at the Human Rights Council has been instrumental in the adoption if this historic decision.
The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a procedure bringing every State of the world, every four years and a half, in front of the Human Rights Council, for a peer review by other States of its human rights situation. NGOs with UN consultative status, such as CGNK, can make written submissions and oral statements. In all of its interventions, CGNK works to promote positive respect for life and the right to life, the nonkilling principle wherever needed – when our means, time and resources allow for it! Thank you for your contributions.
