Africa’s Great Lakes Region has experienced severe armed conflicts, genocides, population displacements and violent political strife during the past two decades. During the 1994 genocide between 800,000 and one million people were killed in Rwanda alone. Since the beginning of he Second Congo War in 1998, over 5 million people have been killed making it the world’s deadliest conflict since World War II. It is estimated that in the Congo death rates are close to 45,000 per month, mainly due to widespread disease and famine.
