Mauritius nonkilling record examined at UPR pre-session
Mauritius comes up for the quadrennial analysis of its Human Rights record on the 7th of November. The Center for Global Nonkilling made an NGO submission for this process, highlighting various ways by which Mauritius can progress towards nonkilling. Christophe Barbey, CGNK’s UN Representative in Geneva was then invited to present our requests at an informal “UPR-Info pre-session” where diplomats and NGO’s meet to present issues and discuss the recommendations that will be made to Mauritius.
CGNK demanded that the Conventions on the prevention and punishment of the crime of Genocide and on enforced disappearances be ratified by Mauritius. Suggestions were also made on the need for constitutional reform to confirm the abolition of the death penalty and to replace an article providing un-sufficient accountability in case of killings by officials by a disposition enhancing and celebrating life instead of allowing for its breach. Christophe Barbey presented CGNK’s general analysis of the situation of life and of the right to life in Mauritius and presented various ways by which Mauritius, which never had an army, could enhance its peace policies and practices, but also help low and middle income countries to follow through with such policies.
