CGNK’s work at the UN Summit of the Future
The situation of humanity on Earth requires more coordination and more accurate measures. The United Nations, its Secretary General Antonio Guterres, have therefore called for, and are preparing a “Summit of the Future” that will take place in New York on the 22nd and 23rd of September this year.
The process started in 2020 during the 75th anniversary of the UN and took a greater leap two years ago with a document called “our common agenda”. Last year, 11 policy briefs and a summary of them was issued. A “Pact for the future”, as well as a “digital pact” and a “Declaration on Future Generations” shall be adopted during the Summit.
Civil society has a word in the process and your Center for Global Nonkilling, thanks to the work of our representative in Geneva, Christophe Barbey, is participating. First, we issued a document for the policy brief on peace and security. Then we issued a document with our views, or suggestions for what the pact should be. We are also participating in ongoing live discussions regarding the process, as a draft zero of the pact is in consultation.
The conditions regarding this work, that comes over our regular UN work, could be better. Deadlines are often short, economic means for it could and should be more available and not the least, we will appreciate more participation from CGNK members and supporters. Please, be assured that we do our best to see life and nonkilling prevail in all circumstances and freely contact us if you want to participate, or provide support.
May the beauty and the bounties of life reach us all.
Yours lively,
Christophe
